After care advice

General

For the first two weeks hair extensions may feel strange. Be prepared to spend more time on washing, drying and styling.

If you have a greasy scalp, you may experience shedding more than normal. In this case it is recommended to apply dry shampoo or apply talcum powder along the lines of bonds.

Washing

Do not wash your hair for 2-3 days after the hair extensions are applied. This will allow the hair to set properly.

It is strongly advised to use professional hair extension shampoo and conditioner. Normal shampoos can contain oil or silicone which damage the bonds and cause them to slip.

It is recommended to wash your hair extensions 2-3 times per week. You can wash hair more often if you wish, but the less stress put on the bonds the better. You can help your hair by holding the roots while washing to avoid stressing the bonds. Before washing detangle your extension hair with a brush. Always wash your extensions with the head backwards, this will prevent tangling. It is best to wash the hair in the shower. Let the shampoo run down the length of the hair.  Do not pile and scrub your hair on top of your head. Rinse it. Do not apply conditioner at the bonds as it may cause the bonds to weaken and slip.

Only condition from the mid lengths to the end of the hair. You can also condition your own hair on the top, just make sure it does get on the bonds. You can leave a conditioner in while having a bath. After your hair is washed, pat dry with towel but do not rub. Comb through with fingers. While the hair is still wet separate each bond from its partner when hair is still wet. This will prevent the strands to tangle with each other.

Make sure you rinse all the after-care products very well. If it is not done properly, hair extensions can trap shampoo at the roots and the scalp can become itchy.

Drying

After having washed your hair, dry it with a towel but do not rub as this can tangle the hair. Do not brush your hair wet. Dry it a little bit with a hair dryer and then untangle carefully if needed when the hair is damp. Use medium heat to dry roots first as if the bonds are left wet they will weaken. Then continue drying while supporting the bonds.

Brushing

Always be very careful when brushing the hair, damp or dry, make sure you support the extensions hair by holding the bonds. Use a soft bristle brush; do not use metal brush or with bobbled ends as they will rip and tear at the extension hair. A hard brush can often pull the hair out. A bristle brush is the most recommended.

Start brushing from the bottom brushing gently upwards while holding the roots. You can divide your hair in sections and brush each section separately.

Styling

The hair can be straightened, curled and blow dried. Heated appliances like hairdryers, strengthening irons, crimpers and tongs can be used on the extension hair; just be careful not to use near the bonds as they can melt and change the shape. Although you will probably find part of hair missed anyway as is it so close to the scalp. It is best to use a strengthening iron with temperature regulation and try not to use them every day as it will burn the ends. It is advisable to use a heat protection spray to protect both your and the extensions hair.

The hair extensions are 100% human hair and can be coloured. Please consult first if you decide to dye extensions yourself. You may also have your roots touched up after your hair starts to grow but avoid putting bleaches or dyes on the bonded areas. Normally it does not affect the extensions but any colouring of the extensions is done so at your own risk. A strand test is recommended before coloring the hair.

Sleeping

Style your hair into a side ponytail and secure with a soft elastic band.  If you want your hair to be wavy, you can plait it at night. NEVER go to bed with your hair wet or damp. It is the best to wear a soft scrunchie and tie your hair in a bun or have a loose plait when you go to bed as it will minimize the chance of knots.

After care products

Unlike your own hair, extensions do not receive the natural oils from your scalp. Therefore the extensions need to be nourished. There are many products available in the market. You will need the basic hair extension shampoo and conditioner which are included in the first application price. During the consultation it will be discussed what other after care products you may need or want to purchase.

Holidays and Sun Care

If you choose to go on holiday anywhere hot, it is a good idea to have maintenance to ensure your extensions are well fitted. When you are sunbathing, put a hat on and put your hair extensions underneath. Sun dries the hair and can heat the bonds. If you go swimming in a sea or chlorine water and don’t want to wear a swim cap, make a pony tail at the lower part of the head and plait the remaining hair very tight, fix it with a band at the end. After swimming wash or rinse your hair properly as salt water or chlorine can dry out the hair. Condition your hair actively avoiding the bonds.

If you use sauna, solarium or steam room wear a hat or wrap your head to create body temperature under it for the bonds. After, wash, dry and comb your hair as described above. It is bad for the bonds to be in a constant damp environment.

Sports

If you do a lot of exercises, use dry shampoo and/or talcum powder in-between washes in case you wash your hair daily.

If you ride a horse, then you should be aware that the helmet may feel tight because of the bonds.

NEVER USE A SAUNA IT WILL MELT THE BONDS AND DRY OUT THE HAIR!

SUNBEDS ALSO USED AT OWN RISK AS THIS ALSO WILL EFFECT THE HAIR!

Swimming

How to swim with hair extensions

Never use a swimming hat if you wear hair extensions. Water will penetrate under your hat, tangle your hair. When removing your swimming hat you risk to pull your hair extensions.

When swimming, keep your head above the water level.

Avoid alcohol

No alcohol on hair extensions

Alcohol based products are not really the best friends of your Hair Extensions. Alcohol based products will dry the extensions out, damage them and matte them down. Excess of alcohol based products can weaken your natural hair and damage it irreversibly.
